Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the Game of Human Chess

IMG_4804

Few people who are not already involved in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu realize how it is much like a game of chess. Although BJJ is a physical activity, it is equally a mental competition. If you are new to this type of martial arts or have not yet begun training, then this is something you should understand.

During a match each competitor must continue to adapt to the movements of the opponent. It is an ongoing battle using strategy. The better you get to know your optional moves through training the better you will become at this human game of chess. In fact, as you train you are basically picking up more chess pieces to use because not all of the pieces are capable of the same strategic moves.

As you continue to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you also begin to learn how to often predict the possible maneuvers of your opponent. This becomes a battle of wits in which you must try to be a move ahead of the person you are competing against. This game of chess will move much quicker than a standard game, and you must begin to be able to plan and make your moves quickly.

Becoming a Skilled Human Chess Player

BJJ training does not just help you with the physical training, it will help you strengthen your mental capabilities as well. The longer you train the more you also begin to recognize your own strengths and your weaknesses. Learning your weaknesses enables you to train how to compensate for this and prevent your opponent from defeating you because of them.

This is much like learning in chess how to avoid leaving your valuable pieces exposed for your opponent to take. If you keep this in mind, as you begin to train you will already have an advantage over your opponent. In fact, even if you have been training for years but have never considered this analogy, this could be a game changer for how you train and compete now.

What many people fail to realize during their BJJ training is that it is not just about learning new techniques. The understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu comes when the person training realizes it is also about learning when and why to use the techniques he or she has learned. New students are very often eager to learn as many new maneuvers as possible.

Learning new moves without the capability to put them to use when needed means you don’t progress. Having a little more patience so that you learn fewer moves but learn how to really use the moves you do learn is what proper BJJ training is all about.

Not all BJJ schools realize this, though, which is why it is important to train somewhere such as Takedown MMA & Fitness located in Vaughan. We take training seriously and want all of our students to understand all of the different aspects that go into BJJ training, not just getting strong or learning new moves you can’t actually use.
